Organization for Positive Action and Leadership Endorses Candidates for District 65 and 202 Elections

EVANSTON—Today the Organization for Positive Action and Leadership (OPAL) endorsed school board candidates for Evanston/Skokie School District 65 and Evanston Township High School District 202 ahead of the April 2, 2019 election.

For District 65, OPAL endorsed incumbents Sergio Hernandez, Jr., Rebeca Mendoza, and Anya Tanyavutti. OPAL cites their commitment and dedication to educational equity in making the endorsement.

“District 65 has come a long way with Anya, Rebeca, and Sergio on the board,” said OPAL President Roger Williams. “We’re proud to endorse them today and ask that they hold Paul Goren accountable for student outcomes—particularly the outcomes of Black students, who have continued to lag behind under this administration.”

For District 202, OPAL endorsed incumbent Vice President Monique Parsons as well as first-time candidates Elizabeth Rolewicz and Stephanie Teterycz.

“During her service to the board, we’ve seen Monique’s commitment to equity in District 202,” said Williams. “Additionally, we believe Liz and Stephanie have the background and commitment to racial equity needed on the high school board.”

OPAL has yet to endorse in the race for Oakton Community College Trustee, but may make endorsements following the organization’s February 28 candidate forum.

The organization plans to host a candidate forum for all District 202 candidates on Wednesday, February 27 at 6:00 p.m. at Chute Middle School and a forum for all Oakton Community College Trustee candidates on Thursday, February 28 at 6:00 p.m. at Chute Middle School. The forums are free and open to the pub
